Named the coolest little capital in the world by Lonely Planet, Wellington definitely has a lot of things to offer. From the culture to the beautiful scenery, the city located at the southern end of the North Island is obviously a top tourist destination. There are a host of places to visit and many fun activities to take part in when one visits the beautiful capital of New Zealand. So what would a typical day out in Wellington be like?

 

Shopping

The city is a shopping haven with lots of top stores and shopping malls. From designer fashion to original art and film memorabilia, shoppers have many items to choose from. The Golden Mile has many great stores that stock high end fashion pieces that would appeal to the exotic shoppers. Old Bank Arcade which is home to some of the topmost Kiwi fashion designers and Kirkcaldie & Stain, the Harrods of New Zealand, are some of the places to visit for the fashion lovers. Other shopping places include Cuba Street which has several cafes and bars that blend with the retail stores and make for a fun shopping experience, Wellington Markets where you can buy New Zealand arts and crafts pieces at affordable prices and Weta Cave that sells costumes from your favorite films. On a day out in Wellington, the avid shopper has lots of places to visit and discover.

 

Nature and wildlife

How can a day out in this great city be complete without basking in the breathtaking beauty that is the wildlife and natural scenery. Wellington has numerous wildlife and nature experiences such as Kiwi spotting to Eco-sanctuaries. A lot of these are located pretty close to the city center and thus it shouldn’t be very difficult to access them. Zealandia Eco-sanctuary is home to tuatara and a variety of native birds. It also has a great exhibition center that tells New Zealand’s history. The Wellington zoo is also an ideal place to spend time with the family as you see some of the endangered animals. About twenty kilometers from the city center, there is a fur seal colony that many people would find fascinating.

Wellington attractions

There are a lot of bars and restaurants that you can visit to sample great traditional cuisine as you mingle with people. Travelling to the summit of the famous Mount Victoria would give you a 360 degrees panoramic view of Wellington. Te Papa Museum is another wonderful place to visit and learn the art, culture and history of New Zealand. You can as well stroll around the amazing waterfront and read some of the wonderful quotes from New Zealand’s writers captured in large stone sculptures. The best way to do it is with coffee or ice cream in hand as you while the day away. Ride the historic cable car from down-town Wellington to the beautiful Botanic Garden where you can have a sweeping view of the harbor and city. A tour of Parliament buildings is also a nice activity when on a day out in Wellington. For stunning beaches and the chance to experience gourmet lifestyle, a visit to the Kapiti Coast would be an excellent addition to your day’s itinerary.
