It’s easy to forget there was once a waterfront with no Te Papa, no Waitangi and Frank Kitts parks, no Chaffers Marina, no Lagoon and no bars, restaurants or events. 

The waterfront is much changed from the bustling port of old. Over recent decades, Wellington City Council, together with many interested Wellingtonians, has developed a vision for the waterfront and its future.

Wellington Waterfront Ltd

Wellington Waterfront Ltd (WWL) is a Council-owned company charged with turning that vision into reality. Together with key partners, we’re working to redevelop the waterfront into a city asset that welcomes all people to live, work and play in the beautiful spaces that connect our city to the sea.

We want to ensure the redevelopment protects our rich cultural and maritime heritage for future generations, but also meets the needs of our capital city as it grows and changes.

Five precincts

Under the Wellington Waterfront Framework, Wellington's waterfront is divided into five precints, each with its own distinctive style and personality:

Waitangi
Taranaki Street Wharf
Frank Kitts Park
Queens Wharf
Kumutoto

Public consultation

Except the land occupied by the Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa Tongarewa, the waterfront is owned by the people of Wellington. Everyone is encouraged to have their say on its development.

Public submissions are actively sought on all design briefs and plans, before they can go ahead.
