The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Te Papa is New Zealand’s national museum, offering visitors a unique and authentic experience of this country’s treasures and stories. It has become renowned as a premium showcase for the nation, an essential encounter for people living here as well as visitors from overseas.

Te Papa provides wonderful learning opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests. Its exhibitions offer dynamic interpretations of New Zealand’s natural environment, culture, and heritage. These are complemented by its varied and distinctive events and education programmes and its tours.

For kids, there is always something great to experience and learn at our action-packed Discovery Centres and, for preschoolers, StoryPlace.

Te Papa’s four Discovery Centres are hands-on learning areas; full of games, computers, and books, specially designed for 7 to 12 year-olds. Fun activities run every weekend and during school holidays. Activities cost $2.

StoryPlace is for children aged 18 months to five years and its programmes (offered up to six times a day) are designed to link with Early Childhood Curriculum. Bookings can be made at the Information Desk on Level 2, or by contacting us on (04) 381 7000 or emailing storyplace@tepapa.govt.nz.

Te Papa is an essential destination for school groups. We offer guided education programmes and resources for self-guided visits, covering many aspects of New Zealand's art and natural and social histories. Te Aka Matua, our library and information centre, is a key access point for enquiries, reference, and research related to our exhibitions and collections. And you can discover more about Te Papa's collections through our bilingual multimedia database Tai Awatea | Knowledge Net. This resources allows you to explore in depth the stories, people, and themes behind treasures from our current and past exhibitions.

A tour with one of our knowledgeable guides can get your initial encounter with Te Papa off to a flying start. The Introducing Te Papa tour departs hourly 10am - 3pm through summer, and twice daily at 10.15am and 2pm through winter. The tour takes 60 minutes, costs $NZ10 per person and does not require pre-booking. Register as you arrive with the Te Papa Hosts at the main entrance.
