Fergs Kayaks

Always wanted to learn how to rock climb or kayak?   We offer a range of courses in rock climbing, kayaking and inline skating suitable for the absolute beginner to those wanting more advanced tuition.

Fergs has the largest indoor real rock face in the country. Our full retail store has kayaks, inline skates and accessories for sale, along with climbing equipment.

Kayaks and inline skates are also available for hire.

And our expert staff are always willing to provide advice on your climbing, kayaking or skating requirements.

Rock climbing

IRock Climbing at Fergsntro to rock

Learn to Rock Climb in a safe ‘real rock’ environment. A three-hour course run every second Monday at 6.30pm suitable for beginners and climbers new to the sport. Also for those who wish to learn the basics about the equipment and techniques required for safe top rope rock climbing.

Intro to Lead

Learn to Lead Climb in a safe and controlled environment. This is a three hour course held every second Monday from 6.30pm suitable for climbers who wish to progress onto leading and learn the basic techniques required.

Kayaking

Basic Skills

This is the course if you want to learn basic skills like paddle strokes, support strokes and rescues so you can be confident in your kayak on the water. Three hours long, the course runs on Sunday mornings from 9.30am.

Introduction to White-Water

So you’ve caught the kayaking bug and want to learn how to paddle white water? This weekend-long course is based in Taupo and will teach you the skills to safely enjoy the challenge of white water rivers whether you’re a playboater or a multisporter.

White Water Intermediate

Here’s your chance to extend yourself with a two-day course to fine tune your moving water paddle skills. Tidy up your Eskimo Roll and make a couple of runs on a Grade 2 River. Learn the basics of river reading and some easy ‘play boat’ moves.

White Water Advanced

This advanced course will fine tune your skills to allow you to paddle Grade 3 water efficiently and have fun doing it.  A four day course, with three days in Taupo and one full day on either the Mohaka or Rangitaiki rivers, putting your new skills into practice.  You’ll brush up on river running skills, hole riding and surfing techniques using slalom gates to improve your timing and accuracy and learn trip leadership and defensive paddling.

Multisport Downriver Racing Course

Keen to get your Grade 2 proficiency certificate for Coast to Coast type races? This weekend long multisport course in Taupo will teach you how to race your kayak down rivers up to Grade 2.  We let you loose on the Waikato and Mohaka rivers to learn the necessary skills, techniques and tips for you to out-do the
competition.

Ocean Kayaking

Are you keen to further your sea kayaking skills? This weekend course will teach you new and interesting skills.

Individual Instruction

We also offer one-on-one personalised instruction in any or all aspects of kayaking. Or would you rather have a one-on-one session with Ian Ferguson himself (Quadruple Olympic Gold Medallist for New Zealand in kayaking K1, 2 and 4 races)?  Ian is available for hour-long sessions. Skating

Learn to Skate

Tired of trying to inline skate and landing on your butt? Or keen to have a go at it for the first time?  You can learn to skate like a professional with the team at Fergs Kayaks.  We also offer individual lessons.

Intermediate Skate

So you’ve completed the Beginners course or already had some inline skating experience and are keen to extend your skills? Take the intermediate course and get the advanced skills and experience you need to skate anywhere in Wellington.
