In July 1997, ship timbers were found under the Old BNZ Bank in Lambton Quay during restoration.
The timbers once formed the bilges of the 1848 Nova Scotia-built wooden sailing ship, the Inconstant. Beached during early colonial development, the vessel was then converted to a warehouse and wharf.
Some 40 tonnes of remains representing four-fifths of the lower part of the vessel have been extracted for preservation. This is what is on display in the Plimmer’s Ark Gallery.
Plimmer’s Ark Gallery is managed by the Museum of Wellington City & Sea.
