In July 1997, ship timbers were found under the old Bank of New Zealand building in Lambton Quay during restoration.
The timbers once formed the bilges of the 1848 Nova Scotia-built wooden sailing ship, the Inconstant. Beached after running aground at the harbour entrance during early colonial development, the vessel was converted to a warehouse and wharf.
Some 40 tonnes of remains representing four-fifths of the lower part of the vessel have been extracted for preservation. This is on display in the Plimmer’s Ark Gallery, TSB Bank Arena, Queens Wharf.
Plimmer’s Ark Gallery is managed by the Museum of Wellington City & Sea.
