Water Whirler Damaged by Vandals

The Len Lye Water Whirler sculpture in Frank Kitts Park is temporarily out of action due to damage to the tilt mechanism and wand caused by vandals.

"It appears that someone has walked all over the dome at the base of the Water Whirler wand and swung or pulled on the wand, causing damage to the tilt mechanism," says Ian Pike, Wellington Waterfront Ltd Chief Executive.

"Public art can be a target for vandalism or stupidity and the Water Whirler is insured for it, but it is still infuriating and upsetting when it happens", Iaments Mr Pike.

"Our advice had been that public sculptures are most at risk of damage from vandals within the first couple of weeks of installation, so we've had security guards standing by since its launch on 7 March. We only stood them down last week and now this happens."

The Water Whirler's maker, Stuart Robb from the Len Lye Foundation, is to examine the extent of the damage and until a repair can be undertaken, the Water Whirler will remain out of action.
