Kumutoto Promenade Temp Closure

The promenade along the water's edge of the waterfront's Kumutoto Precinct will be closed from Monday 12 February for a period of four months as work begins on the creation of new public open space in the area.

Construction of this $11 million development, which extends from the northern end of Shed 5 to the waterfront entrance opposite Whitmore Street, begins with the strengthening and renovation of the 1912 Tug Wharf and promenade at the water's edge and will gradually progress across the precinct to Customhouse Quay.

An alternative route through the precinct for pedestrians and other waterfront users will be designated along the lane running parallel with Customhouse Quay using signs and barriers. This route was trialled successfully while the wharf was closed for maintenance for a couple of weeks in 2006.

An innovative new bridge will be constructed along the promenade and a timber wharf and floating pontoon will improve access for people boarding the Dominion Post Ferry or those wanting to dangle their feet in the sea.

The promenade is expected to reopen in early June with construction of the whole area completed by the end of the 2007.
