Waitangi Park honoured with national and international awards

The design for Waitangi Park on Wellington's waterfront has received prestigious awards from national and international architecture and landscape design institutions.

The New Zealand Institude of Architects announced this week that Waitangi Park was among this year's New Zealand Award recipients.

"We're honoured to have this recognition from our New Zealand peers.  They understand the local cultural contexts and many of the challenges the site had to overcome, such as the multiple layers of uses, connections between the waterfront and the city and the difficult environmental conditions," said one of the park's designers John Hardwick-Smith of Wellington firm Athfield Architects Ltd.

Following this announcement, Athfield Architects' joint-venture partner in the park design, Wraight and Associates Ltd, was informed that Waitangi Park had won a Mention at the prestigious Torsanlorenzo international landscape architecture competition.

"We were thrilled when we got the news," said landscape architect Megan Wraight.

"To get a Mention is an incredible honour.  We were one of only four projects to make the finals in the Urban Green Spaces category out of dozens of entries from around the world.  The first prize winner of our category was the 658 hectare Olympic Forest Park in Beijing.  So we couldn't have been in better - or bigger - company."

Ian Pike, CEO of Wellington Waterfront Limited, the client in this project, is also delighted with the recognition the park has attracted:

"A key objective for the development of Wellington's waterfront is that it be nationally and internationally recognised for its design.  These accolades testify to the fact that with our own local talent, we can achieve that aim."
