Waterfront Promenade Re-Opens

27 November 2007

The northern waterfront promenade between Shed 5 and the old Eastbourne Ferry Terminal is to re-open from 9am on Thursday 29 November.

The promenade, to be given a Maori blessing earlier that morning by the Wellington Tenths Trust, has been closed since February while the new Meridian building and surrounding public spaces were under construction.

The revamped promenade includes a new bridge that links the old Tug Wharf to the seaside promenade adjacent to the Loaded Hog.  This bridge spans a new declamation which brings the mouth of the Kumutoto Stream (for which this area of the waterfront is now named) closer to the harbour’s edge.

The stream mouth is surrounded by walkways and a series of platforms that allow people to get right down to the water’s edge.  Other works in this area have seen the development of a new floating pontoon and landing pier for the Dominion Post Ferries.

The area is to be officially opened by the Mayor at 5pm on Wednesday 5 December and will be fully open to the public thereafter.
