Waitangi Park Design And Construction Explained

3 June 2005

Wellington Waterfront Ltd is to erect today, nine interpretive signs around the perimeter of the Waitangi Park construction site, that explain to passers-by the features of the park and how they’re being built.

“For months now, great mounds of earth have piled up across the site, buildings have been torn down, concrete poured, piles sunk and plywood hoardings erected and dismantled,” remarked Wellington Waterfront Ltd Chief Executive, Ian Pike.

“The purpose of these signs is to help Wellingtonians visualise how much enjoyment they’re going to get out of the park once it’s completed, see how stunning the design is and learn something of the history of the area and the construction processes that are underway now,” he says.

The signs are 2.4 metres wide and 1.2 metres high and feature full colour artists impressions, photographs and text.  They are located around the perimeter of the park, at the corner near the lower entrance to the Te Papa Marae, the corner of Oriental Parade and Herd Street and along Oriental Parade the Cable Street promenades.
