Shed 22 Brewery Development Set To Begin
19 November 2001
Developers, Willis Bond & Co Ltd, are now set to start the transformation of Shed 22 on Wellington's waterfront into a Lion Brewery and heritage centre incorporating a restaurant/bar. The building will also house the regional offices of Lion Breweries. Resource consent has now been obtained.
Preliminary construction is now beginning on the building, which involves strengthening the foundation and adding two floors over half the inside space. This work is expected to be completed early in the new year, when construction on the brewery will begin. The brewery is expected to be completed by mid-2002.
"We are redeveloping Shed 22 because it is a historical site that will work well as a brewery and complement Lion Brown in particular, and reflect Lion Nathan's commitment to beer in general," says Roger North, managing director Lion Nathan New Zealand. "We intend that the brewery will complement the surrounding entertainment and tourism facilities and contribute to Wellington's reputation as New Zealand's arts and entertainment capital."
"It has been quite a process to get to this stage, but all the parties involved are now keen to progress the redevelopment of this building as soon as is possible," says Mark McGuinness, Managing Director of Willis Bond & Co Ltd. "So much so that work is set to begin almost immediately."
Waterfront management company, Lambton Harbour Management Limited, is also pleased with the outcome of deliberations. "Firstly this development ensures that all the heritage values of the building will be maintained, but it will also add to the life and vitality of the waterfront," says David Gascoigne, Chairman of Lambton Harbour Management Limited.
The plans for the restoration of the building are the work of Athfield Architects Ltd.
