Herd Street Closed From 2 August

The thoroughfare between Cable Street and Oriental Parade via Chaffers and Herd streets is to be closed permanently from Monday 2 August as work begins on the construction of Waitangi Park.

Chaffers and Herd streets were legally stopped by the Wellington City Council in 1997 in readiness for the area’s development.

The Oriental Parade end of Herd Street will be blocked off to all but construction vehicles as improvements are carried out to the Clyde Quay entrance to the waterfront.

Pedestrian access will be maintained but vehicles wanting to get to the Overseas Passenger Terminal will have to come via Chaffers Street until the new Herd Street entrance is re-opened.

Once that work is finished, the contractors will move on to constructing new street-side promenades along Cable Street and Chaffers Street will be permanently closed.
