Re-Berthing At Chaffers Marina

Starting Monday 22 March, berths on the two outer piers of Chaffers Marina will be removed and replaced with larger berths.

The construction work involves the removal of 20 existing 10-metre berths at the end of E Pier and 14 12-metre berths on the northern side of Pier D to provide a wider channel for vessels to access the 11 new 17 metre berths on Pier D.

Pier D will also be extended by one bay providing for two new 20-metre berths.

Mooring piles, walkways and fingers to the affected areas on Pier D will be renewed.

The work is being undertaken by Wellington Waterfront Limited to create more, larger berths to meet demand.

“Owners of smaller vessels are generally less inclined to purchase berths of their own because the cost cannot be justified against the value of their boat.  Larger berths are scarce, therefore demand for them is higher,” explains Wellington Waterfront Chief Executive Keith McGavin.

The new berths are currently on the market.  Of the 13 larger berths, five have already been sold.

The work is being undertaken by Bellingham Marine and is expected to take approximately six weeks.
