Waitangi Park Construction Contract Awarded

Construction Service Company (Wellington) Ltd has been awarded the contract to build the first, and largest, part of Waitangi Park on Wellington’s waterfront.

Work will begin next week establishing equipment and materials on-site before actual construction commences about the first week of August.

The former Chaffers Park site, currently used for skate boarding and the popular Chaffers Market, will be incorporated into Waitangi Park as will the adjacent Cable Street car park operated by Care Park Ltd.  These facilities will be kept going for as long as possible before the construction programme means they have to close. New facilities for these activities have been included in the park design.

Herd Street will close to through traffic as soon as construction starts on improving the access way between the Overseas Passenger Terminal and Oriental Parade.

Chaffers Street, on the waterfront side of Cable Street, will close to all traffic later in the programme as the area is incorporated into the Park design.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2005.
